1. What is zoning?

Zoning provides the standards and regulations that apply to land and structures in the Town of Summerville. These standards and regulations help implement the Town's Comprehensive Plan that contains goals, policies and recommendations of how development in the Town is to be achieved. 

The Town has numerous zoning districts. Each one has a list of permitted uses and standards for building setbacks, densities, and heights. Additionally, some areas may have overlay districts that stipulate additional design guidelines, such as in the Downtown Historic District.

2. What if I want to remove a tree?

The Town of Summerville’s Tree Protection Ordinance provides for additional review and approval for removing trees of certain sizes. For more information and to obtain a application for removal of individual trees visit our Tree Ordinance & Tree Removal Permits page.

3. Why did I get selected for Jury Duty?

The selection is a random computer pick. These names are taken from the Berkeley County and Dorchester County voter’s registration list. This list is updated yearly.

4. What if I ignore my jury summons or just forget about it?

The judge can find you in contempt of court if you do not appear or contact the court. The sentence is punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment.

5. What type of payments does the Municipal Court accept?

We accept cash, credit/debit cards. and money order. No business checks will be accepted. The court no longer accepts personal checks.
