Coffee with a Cop brings police officers and the community they serve together to discuss issues and learn more about each other.
Coffee with a Cop was launched in Hawthorne, California, in 2011 when officers from the Hawthorne Police Department sought ways to better interact with the citizens they serve daily. Community policing has long been a framework for establishing trust between the community and police. However, shifting demographics, an increase in commuters, and new communication methods like websites and social media have changed the character and composition of our nation's communities. The Hawthorne Police Department found a simple solution to break through these barriers: a cup of coffee. Coffee with a Cop events are now held in all 50 states and have become one of the most successful community-oriented policing programs nationwide. The program has also expanded internationally to Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Latin America. The key to Coffee with a Cop's growing success is that it fosters interactions outside of the crisis situations that typically bring law enforcement officers and community members together.
For the past few years, the Summerville Police Department has participated in Coffee with a Cop events around town with great success.
