Job Description

The Public Safety Communications (PSC) IT Technician supports the communication infrastructure and maintaining mission readiness for public safety technology functions within the Town of Summerville.  Under general supervision, the PSC IT Technician assists the PSC IT Manager perform technical work installing, configuring, administering, and supporting computer network hardware and software. 


  • Install software and hardware.
  • Perform general maintenance, troubleshoot and repair computer systems.
  • Assist IT Manager with projects.
  • Provide assistance to the IT Manager involving network related issues.
  • Ensure that the technology provided is fast, accurate and the most secure method to access information, in order for employees to be serviced in a highly efficient and effective manner.
  • Attend training, meetings, workshops, etc. to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Perform general administrative/clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Receive and/or review a variety of reports and records such as application and system event logs, network bandwidth reports, help desk service calls, technology publications, and Municipal Association information.
  • Refer to technology issues, information technology documentation, and backup system logs.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment and machinery such as servers, routers, switches, wireless access points, printers, plotters, desktop and laptop computers, telephone sets, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as required.



Requires an Associate degree or equivalent of two years of college experience in computer science technology, or related field supplemented by four years of experience in the network engineering and/or computer science field to include hardware and software installation and service; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  Requires Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) Network + or A+.  Also, a valid SC driver’s license is required.


Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a variety of computer equipment. Must be able to exert up to forty pounds of force occasionally and/or up to twenty pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  May involve lifting, walking or standing for periods of time.
